We grow 34 acres of Pinot noir (4 Pinots: Scallop Shelf, Pomarium, Ama, Sonoma Coast), 8 acres of Syrah (2 Syrah: Les Titans, La Bruma), 7 acres of Chardonnay (2 Chardonnay: Estate, Sonoma Coast), 1.8 acres of Viognier (Estate), 0.4 acres of Roussanne and 0.2 acres of Marsanne (Estate blend). Could it be Vanessa Wong’s gentle-yet-deft hand in the cellar? Nick Peay’s methodical approach to organic winemaking in the extreme hilltops of the West Sonoma Coast? Or perhaps Andy Peay’s boisterous personality which makes such serious wine seem so fun and approachable? It must be a combination of all three, plus, of course, the amazing wines they produce vintage after vintage.

Peay Vineyards is a pioneer in what is now known as the West Sonoma Coast, the cold, mountainous, high-altitude wine growing regions that are ticked by fog blowing in from the Pacific Ocean. In Annapolis, one of the most northerly vineyard sites in the appellation, the Peays grow some of California’s most exciting and elegant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah (plus a very small amount of cool-climate Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne). These organic vineyards drape the subtle slopes of the mountain top, with most of the vineyards peaking out above the fog line, getting just enough sun to get these grapes ripe over a long growing season.

While many wineries will name their individual wines after single vineyards, Peay Vineyards is essentially one single vineyard cut into different parcels where certain clones or varieties will have their best chance at finding greatness. All of the plots and clones are picked and fermented individually, with over 20 wines being made with the intent to blend. Each estate Pinot Noir (Ama, Pomarium, Scallop Shelf) is blended only after the team blind-tastes each of the various components. Ama is consistently my favorite of the three, as I love the earthiness it gives as it ages. Pommard, Dijon 115 and 777 clones round out and tie the wine together with a softness, adding a plush pillow to the angularity of block 7.

If you like Burgundy, you’ll love Ama. Especially in a few more years. See if you can let her sit for another 3-5 years, but if you absolutely cannot, please decant her so she can stretch her legs and give you her best face. These wines really only get better with patience. — Cara Patricia
