Rioja and Navarra

Explore the celebrated wines of Spain’s Rioja and Navarra regions, each known for its rich winemaking heritage and distinct grape varieties.

  • Rioja’s Rich Palette: Dominated by Tempranillo, the leading grape variety, Rioja also embraces Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo. These grapes contribute to the complex profiles of Rioja’s wines, from the lighter, fruit-driven styles of Rioja Alta to the full-bodied and intense wines of Rioja Alavesa and the diverse expressions of Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja). White wines are made predominantly from Viura, along with varieties like Garnacha Blanca and Malvasia, producing elegant and aromatic white wines.
  • Navarra’s Varietal Diversity: While Tempranillo also plays a significant role here, Navarra is renowned for its Garnacha and increasingly for international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The region offers everything from traditional styles to innovative blends, reflecting its varied terroirs from the cooler, vineyard-clad foothills of the Pyrenees to the warmer southern plains.
  • The autonomía of Aragon, to the east of Rioja and Navarra, contains four DOs: Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Cariñena, and Somontano.

Aging Classifications of Rioja:

Crianza: Aged a minimum of two years, with at least one year in oak, these wines are perfect for those seeking a harmonious balance of fruit and spice.

Reserva: Selected from the finest vintages and aged at least three years, with one in oak, these wines offer greater depth and complexity.

Gran Reserva: Crafted only in exceptional years, aged for a minimum of five years, including two in oak and three in the bottle, resulting in supreme refinement and elegance.
