Caprili 2018 Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy

Caprili is a Brunello estate in the southwestern sector of the Montalcino appellation near the hamlet of Tavernelle. They are considered one of the old guard of Montalcino producers as they were established in 1965 when they split off from the famous Pieve Santa Restituta estate. The estate is extremely well located, next to Pieve Santa Restituta but also immediately adjacent to Soldera. As such, it is no surprise they are making great wine at Caprili.  The bigger surprise is that they are still very much “under-the-radar”!?

  • Winemaker: Giacomo Bartolommei
  • Farming: Organic Practicing
  • Varieties: 100% Sangiovese Grosso
  • Soil / Terroir: Mixed limestone and silica rocks of Montalcino, near Siena. Southwestern exposure at 1200 feet above sea level. About 24 acres planted with Sangiovese. The average age is about 10 years old with a significant portion over 20 years old.
  • Vinification: Fermentation under controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks for about 25 to 28 days, with 8-10 soft daily pump-overs.
  • Aging: Three years in small French oak barrels and 4 months in the bottle.
  • Tasting Notes: The color is ruby red, shading into garnet. Aromas of berries, significant acidic bone and firm tannins. It is recommended to uncork the bottle a few hours before serving. Ideal with red meats, roasts, game and aged cheeses.
