With minor exceptions, all wines are made from grapes grown on our 53-acre hilltop vineyard located above a river in the far northwestern corner of the West Sonoma Coast, 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean at Sea Ranch. We grow 34 acres of Pinot noir (4 Pinots: Scallop Shelf, Pomarium, Ama, Sonoma Coast), 8 acres of Syrah (2 Syrah: Les Titans, La Bruma), 7 acres of Chardonnay (2 Chardonnay: Estate, Sonoma Coast), 1.8 acres of Viognier (Estate), 0.4 acres of Roussanne and 0.2 acres of Marsanne (Estate blend). We also make a Pinot noir from the famed Savoy Vineyard in Anderson Valley.
Winemaker: Nick Peay and Vanessa Wong
Farming: Certified organic
Varieties: Pinot Noir
Terroir: Savoy is in a continental growing region where days are warm and evenings are cold. As such, the weather is often better at flowering for the vines and yields are far higher and more predicable than in a maritime climate like Peay Estate. But, importantly, the wines are also not fruit-driven wines and, while concentrated, always have a savory character and what people call “Mendocino spice”. It is akin to turned earth and some brown spices which counter-balance the sweet, dark cherry fruit expression of Savoy.
Tasting notes: The aroma on the 2017 Savoy is captivating with sexy rose petal and dried leaf components complementing the iron, dark cherry, and red apple skin flavors. The mid palate is fresh with medium body and silky but light tannins. This is an incredibly easy wine to love and is pleasurable right now and will be for the next 10+ years.
