Ronco Calino MV 'Saten' Franciacorta, Lombardy, Italy

Paolo and Lara Imberti Radici overlook 10 hectares of organically-farmed single cru Franciacorta vineyards from their lovely hilltop home in Adro. Since 1996, they have embodied the passion and dynamism of the region, striving to produce the most vibrant examples of small grower Franciacorta. Situated less than ten kilometers south of Lake Iseo, the estate’s rolling hills and morainic soils of calcareous gravel and sand are excellently suited to the cultivation of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
  • Winemakers: Paolo and Lara Imberti Radici
  • Farming: Organic
  • Varieties: 100% Chardonnay
  • Soils / Terroir: Calcareous Gravel, Sand
  • Vinification: The Satèn is hand harvested, with gentle pressing of the whole clusters. The initial fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with 30% of the Chardonnay fermenting in aged french oak.
  • Tasting Notes: Italian for 'silk,' Satèn is Franciacorta's rendition of Blanc de Blancs. Always 100% Chardonnay and Brut in style, Satèn further differs from other Franciacortas in having lower pressure (5 bars of pressure versus the traditional 6) in the bottle, thus giving it a soft mouthfeel. This wine has complexity, freshness and depth, and of course, is lusciously silky across the palate.

Italian for 'silk,’ satèn is Franciacorta's rendition of Blanc de Blancs. Always 100% white grapes (predominantly Chardonnay with a small allowance for Pinot Bianco) and always Brut in style, satèn further differs from other Franciacortas in having lower atmospheric pressure (maximum five bars of pressure versus the traditional six) in the bottle, thus giving it a softer, silkier mouthfeel.

Franciacorta is the most important sparkling wine DOCG in all of Italy (sorry, Prosecco) and is the only *true* rival to Champagne in the country as well. Based on long lees aging (at least 31 months aging on lees from the date of harvest) in the cellar, Franciacorta’s signature is seductive creaminess and lift.

The Ronco Calino satèn is 100% hand harvested chardonnay, with gentle pressing of the whole clusters. The initial fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with 30% of the Chardonnay fermenting in old french oak barrels. This wine has complexity, freshness and depth, and of course, is lusciously silky across the palate. Expect fresh acidity and a creamy mouthfeel, with white stone-fruit, spring wildflower blossoms, and orange citrus blossom expanding into a brioche and marzipan finish due to three years of cellar aging.

As far as pairing and aging goes, treat this like a blanc de blancs Champagne. It can age 5-10 years in bottle easily, and yes, soft ripened cheese will be a delicious pairing, but the body can work at any point in a meal. If you were in Lombardy, you’d be enjoying Northern Italian dishes like polenta or raviolo with cheese and brown butter, white sauce pasta, roasted light meats. The sky is the limit.
Or, skip the food altogether and bring a glass to the bath!

You might love this more than Champagne! And if you’re ever in Lombardia, you can make an appointment to taste at their cellars!
