Weingut Wittmann Spätburgunder Trocken, Rheinhessen 2020

The Wittmann family has been growing grapes and producing wine in the small Rheinhessen village of Westhofen since 1663. Today, the estate cultivates 62 acres of vines in the rolling limestone hills found in the southern part of the region, just west of the Rhine river valley.

Winemakers: Philipp Wittmann

Terroir: The soils are primarily based on limestone, with a mix of topsoils, including clay, marl and loess.

Farming: Certified Biodynamic

Vinification: The Spätburgunder, also known as Pinot Noir, fruit is hand harvested from an estate-owned vineyard in the village of Westhofen. After harvest the fruit is 100% destemmed, which is followed by a native yeast fermentation.

Aging: The wine is then aged for 16 months in 250L oak barrels ranging between 2-3 years old.

Tasting Notes: Aromatically the wine has notes of tart, red berry fruits, damp brush, and a hint of minerality. On the palate, the wine is clearly made in a Burgundian style, with fresh fruit flavors that remain reserved, delightful acidity, and notes of damp earth.
