  • Winemaker: Enno Lippold
  • Varieties: Riesling (off-dry)
  • Farming: Sustainable with Organic Practices (Lutte Raisonée)
  • Terroir: Red Slate Soils, 65+ year old vines
  • Vinification: Vinified and aged entirely in stainless steel vats, and intentionally  released after a minimum of one year in the bottle, it displays classic  Mosel mineral and lime notes throughout with bright, crisp acidity and  just enough residual sugar to soften the edges.
Christened and named by the Francophile Enno Lippold after Napoleon's  wife Josephine, it is meant to be a reminder that Riesling from the Mosel was once prized throughout the French court and, in particular, held in high esteem by none other than the wife of the emperor. Napoleon  controlled this area of Germany for almost 15 years following his very successful military campaigns in the area.

With vines located in the prized vineyards of Urzig in the Mosel valley, Lippold then set out with his friend and partner Benedikt Pfeifer to produce Riesling wines that would be released only after spending an appropriate time in bottle. The appropriate time varies between vineyards & vintages, but Lippold and many Riesling lovers believe that the nuanced complexity that makes this varietal shine, is not apparent to the taster early after bottling and that the wines need 2-4 years in bottle to show their potential. The bulk of Lippold's holdings are in the Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard, located mid-slope on the south exposed bend of the Mosel above Urzig, not far from Bernkastel-Keus.
