Founded in 1899 as a quality-focused winery, the Merkelbachs hand-farmed their parcels in Urzig, Erden, and Kinheim. Alfred took over at age 14 when his father fell ill in 1951.
Winemakers: Alfred and Rolf Merkelbach. Well into their eighties, Alfred and Rolf still tend the vines and make the wines
Variety: Riesling
Terroir: Just over one hectare estate divided between Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Treppchen, and Kinheimer Rosenberg. Stony, weathered red slate on the steep slopes of Würzgarten, own-rooted vines, average age 50 years old.
Vinification: The Merkelbachs vinify each parcel separately, each fuder representing a different parcel. Spontaneous fermentation in old Mosel Fuder (1200L casks). The wines are mainly matured in wooden barrels.
